Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelensky says a coup attempt in Ukraine was recently averted. The attempt would involve Russians and Ukrainians, the president said. The Kremlin denies any involvement.
The president said the coup should have happened on December 1 or 2. However, he also gave little information. Zelensky also declined to say anything about Russia’s involvement.
Zelensky spoke at a press conference that lasted hours about the danger Russia poses to Ukraine. “We’ve been at war with Russia for eight years. So if they invade our country, we’ll be all set.”
Tensions between the two countries have been rising in recent weeks. Russia is stationing more and more soldiers in the border area. However, Zelenski thinks the situation is no different from a few months ago. Even then, the tension was high, he said.
Armed conflict between pro-Russian rebels and the government has been going on in eastern Ukraine since 2014. Zelensky said during the press conference that he had no intention of starting another offensive in the east.
