Thunderstorms swept southern California on Wednesday morning. Lightning struck a woman and her two dogs while out for a walk in Pico Rivera, a suburb of metropolitan Los Angeles. There were no witnesses to the incident.
Police found the victim, a 52-year-old woman, dead on the road.
A doctor examined the woman at the scene and determined that she had died from lightning. “The chance of something like this happening is 1 in 1 million,” said the local police.
