After the massacre in the Ukrainian city of Bucha, the United States wants to remove Russia from the United Nations Human Rights Council.

Washington will ask the UN General Assembly to suspend Russia, the US ambassador to the UN said.

Ukraine accuses Russian troops of killing hundreds of civilians in Butya near Kyiv’s Ukrainian capital. Russia denies involvement in the massacre.

Russia is in its second year of a three-year term on the Human Rights Council based in Geneva, Switzerland.

Suspending a country for persistent gross human rights violations requires a two-thirds vote of the 193 member states of the New York General Assembly.
