Thirty buses are on their way to the besieged Ukrainian city of Mariupol to pick up evacuees via a humanitarian corridor into Ukraine-controlled territory, Deputy Prime Minister Irina Vereshchuk said on television on Tuesday.
There were signs that Russian troops were firing toward a humanitarian aid route, she added, without giving further details.
Escape routes are open for people who want to leave for five besieged Ukrainian cities, the Russian Defense Ministry announced earlier. These are Kyiv, Kharkiv, Mariupol, Sumi and Chernihiv.
On Tuesday morning, Ukrainian authorities reported that evacuations had begun from Sumi and Irpin on the northwestern outskirts of Kyiv.
