The Court Case Against Assange Started, The Next Stop on A Long Legal Road

Is Julian Assange extradited to the United States or not? A London court is considering this question from today, under heavy security. The US wants to try Assange for 18 different crimes.

For that, he can get up to 175 years in prison.

The US wants to prosecute the Australian founder of the whistleblower website WikiLeaks for hacking into government computers and violating espionage legislation.

About ten years ago, WikiLeaks published secret American documents about the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

He is also suspected of collaborating with army analyst Chelsea Manning, who previously ended up in jail for leaking those documents.

According to various journalist associations and other organizations such as Amnesty International, a conviction would set a dangerous precedent for freedom of the press.
