Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is a “correction of history,” Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said. In a telephone conversation with his counterpart Vladimir Putin, he said the raid would restore the global balance of power after the fall of the Soviet Union, according to his office.

The Assad regime is a staunch ally of the Russians, who support the government in Damascus in the civil war in Syria. Moscow has bombed many of them and claims to have stationed more than 60,000 soldiers there.

Assad supports Russia’s position that it is within its rights to confront NATO’s expansion.

“Western countries bear responsibility for the chaos and bloodshed,” the head of state said, accusing the West of “dirty methods of supporting terrorists in Syria and Nazis in Ukraine”.
