Russian Government Resigns, Putin Proposes New Prime Minister

The Russian government has resigned. This will give President Putin room to implement changes to the constitution.

Putin immediately proposes to the parliament to designate Mikhail Mizustin, the head of the tax authorities, as the new prime minister.

Putin addressed the Russian parliament earlier today and proposed several constitutional reforms there. To make that possible, the current government is resigning.

Putin said, according to the Interfax news agency, that the government has failed to fulfil all its duties and that it will later choose a new government.

He asked the government to stay until he has elected new ministers.

Putin did not wait long to nominate a new prime minister: on Wednesday he introduced Mikhail Masjestin, the unknown chief of the tax authorities.
