Russia reports a record number of new corona deaths since the start of the pandemic 1.5 years ago. In 24 hours, 808 people succumbed to the virus, authorities said on Thursday.
For weeks there have been high death rates, despite the lower number of new infections. So far, more than 168,000 people have died from Covid-19 in Russia, which has a population of about 146 million.
It is generally believed that the actual number of deaths from the corona is even higher.
According to the latest figures from the Rosstat statistics office, nearly 422,000 more people died between January and June than were born. As a result, the population decline was almost 60 percent higher than in the first half of 2020.
Nearly 27 percent of Russians have had at least one corona jab so far. That is considerably less than in Western European countries, for example.
