The Kremlin rejects Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny’s charge that President Vladimir Putin is responsible for the near-fatal poisoning attack on him.

“We believe that such allegations against the Russian president are unfounded and unacceptable,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskov said on Thursday.

The chairman of the Russian Duma, Vyacheslav Volodin, said Putin had just helped save the dissident’s life.

Peskov accuses Navalny of being a CIA agent: “I can specify that experts from the Central Intelligence Agency of the United States are working with him.”

“It is not the first time that they have given him instructions,” added Peskov.

Navalni thinks Putin is behind his recent poisoning. “I have no other version of what happened,” said the Kremlin critic in an interview with the German magazine Der Spiegel.

The 44-year-old activist also said he is unafraid and wants to get fit as soon as possible to continue his fight. “Not returning would mean that Putin has achieved his goal. And now it is my job to remain the man who is not afraid,” he said.
