Russian media regulator Roskomnadzor has blocked Navalny.com, the website of imprisoned opposition leader Alexei Navalny. According to his supporters, dozens of sites associated with Navalny have been shut down.
The internet has been the backbone of Navalny’s political activism for over a decade. He started as a fighter against corruption and abuse of power, and the influence of extremely wealthy entrepreneurs in and around the Kremlin.
His actions became known all over the country thanks to the internet. And many demonstrations and actions have been launched via the internet. Unfortunately, the Russian authorities are in the process of shutting down the networks for being extremist.
The Kremlin critic is currently serving a prison sentence for embezzlement that he allegedly committed in 2009. The trial, in that case, is also controversial and was brought against him precisely when he was able to come to the fore and gain influence politically thanks to the internet.
At the time, Navalny wanted to present himself in elections as an alternative to President Putin.
