Pompeo Lashes Out At China and Wants A Bigger Role for Taiwan. China could have prevented the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people who died during the corona crisis.
That said US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who accused the Chinese authorities of still withholding information. He advocated a role for Taiwan within the World Health Organization (WHO).
Pompeo said at a news conference that China silenced whistleblowers when the virus emerged. Samples of the virus are also said to have been destroyed.
According to him, that Chinese approach had major consequences for the rest of the world. “China could have prevented the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people worldwide. China could have saved the world an economic slump. They had a choice.”
It is not the first time that the minister has presented such criticism. The corona crisis has further strained relations between the US and China.
The US government, itself under attack for its corona policy, says Beijing has tried to keep the health crisis a secret. This allowed the virus to take hold. China contradicts the criticism and says it has been transparent.
Minister Pompeo said that “reliable partners” are needed during such crises. “I call on all countries, including those in Europe, to express their support for Taiwan’s participation as an observer in the WHO General Assembly,” said Pompeo.
He asked WHO CEO Tedros to invite Taiwan to the next meeting of that body. Pompeo’s request is expected to be poor in Beijing. Taiwan sees this as a renegade province.
