Democratic President of the United States House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi has asked the two top US intelligence officials to clarify the alleged Russian bounties for Taliban fighters for the killing of US soldiers in Afghanistan.
The Washington Post reported on Sunday that Russia is said to have promised rewards to Taliban fighters who killed U.S. military personnel.
“Congress and the country need answers now,” said Pelosi in the letter to intelligence chief John Ratcliffe and CIA director Gina Haspel.
“I, therefore, request an immediate briefing of the Joint Intelligence for all members of the House of Representatives.”
President Donald Trump said on Sunday that he was not aware of the supposed Russian policy.
Trump said in a message on Twitter that intelligence officials subsequently told him that a report on Russian premiums to Taliban fighters for the killing of US military personnel in Afghanistan is “not credible.”
Russia denies that it has offered Afghan Taliban fighters money to kill American soldiers. The Kremlin dismissed the charges as “lies” on Monday.
