The British authorities have given nearly 140,000 people their first vaccination against Covid-19 in just a few days.
The UK had a world first when the regulator approved the vaccine from Pfizer and BioNTech for use through an emergency procedure.
“The vaccination program is off to a good start. We have now been on the road for seven days, and this is what we have achieved,” said responsible minister Nadhim Zahawi on Twitter.
It listed the number of vaccinations per region: “England: 108,000, Wales: 7897, Northern Ireland: 4000, Scotland: 18,000. Total: 137,897.”
The people who have been vaccinated are not immediately fully protected. They will receive the vaccine again after 21 days.
The UK has ordered 40 million doses of the vaccine, but not all of them have been delivered yet. The first batch consisted of about 800,000 doses, which are kept at a temperature of 70 degrees below zero.
