Former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi is seriously ill. That says a prosecutor in Milan wants to suspend the trial of the 84-year-old politician for the time being.
Berlusconi contracted the coronavirus last year and also ended up in hospital repeatedly in recent months. He also spent several days there last week. His lawyer says that the former prime minister is now being cared for at home. “Of course we are concerned,” said counsel.
In addition to medical problems, the politician also has legal issues. He is suspected of bribing witnesses at an earlier trial. That revolved around his association with a minor prostitute. Berlusconi was sentenced to seven years in prison for this in 2013 but was acquitted on appeal.
Justice thinks that the eighties cannot appear in court for the time being but wants to continue the prosecution of other suspects in the case. The court may rule on this on 26 May. Then another hearing is planned.
The wealthy and outspoken Berlusconi has been one of the most famous figures in Italian public life for decades. He is considered one of the wealthiest people in the country and has served as prime minister on several occasions. Berlusconi is still active in Italian politics with his Forza Italia party.
