EU Stockpiles Resources Against Biological or Nuclear Disaster

The European Union has built up a strategic stockpile of medicines and other resources to treat patients exposed to radioactive radiation or chemical or biological substances.

Disinfectants and iodine tablets have also been purchased and stored as protection against a nuclear disaster, the European Commission announced. Three million potassium iodide pills were sent directly to Ukraine.

The EU stock of materials to treat or protect against chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) threats is worth EUR 540.5 million.

The stock is being built partly out of concern about the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the threat of the deployment of nuclear or other CBRN resources.
