Worldwide, at least 897 million children are without education, say the European Union and UN children’s rights organization UNICEF.
High representatives of both organizations are deeply concerned about the future of those children and come up with a video campaign.
The 897 million children are being kept out of school due to conflicts, poverty and the corona crisis, among other things. According to the EU and UNICEF, the longer they are out of school, the likelihood children will continue to go to school decreases.
According to UNICEF Director Henrietta Fore, this is a “real emergency”. “Our message is clear: governments should spare no effort to keep schools open or to reopen them as a matter of priority,” Fore said.
EU foreign chief Josep Borrell: “Far too many children today live in conditions that hold back the education they deserve. The pandemic has widened the yawning chasm.”
