US President Donald Trump calls for a boycott of the car tire manufacturer Goodyear Tire & Rubber.
According to Trump, Goodyear has banned his red campaign caps with the election slogan “Make America Great Again” (MAGA) in the workplace.
“Don’t buy Goodyear tires. They have announced a ban on MAGA caps. Buy much better tires for a lot less money”, says Trump’s tweet.
His call follows images on social media in which employees would be approached in a training session about suitable work clothing.
In addition, clothing with, for example, texts about “Black Lives Matter” and support for homosexuals and transgender people would be considered appropriate. In contrast, dress with, for example, Trump’s MAGA slogan is deemed to be unacceptable.
Goodyear said in a statement that the images are not from the company, nor do they belong to a diversity training session.
The group says it has zero-tolerance for all forms of intimidation and discrimination and asks employees in the workplace to refrain from political statements of support for any party or candidate.
Investors on Wall Street were shocked to Trump’s tweet, as the Goodyear stock fell 6 percent shortly afterwards. Later the losses were somewhat eliminated. Goodyear is North America’s largest tire manufacturer.
