Doctors at the Brazilian hospital in Manaus had to perform a special ‘operation’. A man came for a consultation with severe abdominal pain, but the usual treatments turned out to be inapplicable.
Instead, an x-ray showed that he had a 20-centimetre barbell in his abdominal cavity.
The 54-year-old Brazilian did not dare to go to the hospital immediately. He knew what awaited him there. After two days, he decided that the pain had become unbearable and went to the emergency room. He complained of pain in his bowels, nausea and constipation.
According to the doctors, the man did not cooperate well during the investigation. And so they decided to make an x-ray. In those images, the cause of the pain was quickly clear. In his abdominal cavity was a weight of 2 kilograms. And that was about 20 centimetres long.
The man was sedated, and doctors tried to remove the weight with medical forceps but were unsuccessful. That is why the doctors chose to work ‘manually’. In the end, a doctor was able to remove the barbell manually.
