Any new aggression by Russia against Ukraine will provoke a serious reaction. The United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken issued that warning on Tuesday on the sidelines of a NATO ministerial meeting in the Latvian capital Riga.

“Any escalation by Russia would be a matter of great concern to both the United States and Latvia, and any further aggression would have dire consequences,” he said at a news conference with his Latvian counterpart Edgars Rinkevics.

Blinken declined to elaborate on what such a response would entail, saying that he would first consult with US and NATO allies in Riga on Tuesday and Wednesday. “We are very concerned about the movements we are seeing,” he said of Russian troops on the Ukrainian border.

The US diplomatic chief also warned again that Washington is working with the European Union on new sanctions against Belarus. That country has been accused of “cynically” using migrants as “weapons” to destabilize its European neighbours.
