Americans now have the option to pay with bitcoins at car manufacturer Tesla. CEO Elon Musk announced this via Twitter.
Customers outside the United States have to wait a while before buying branded electric cars with the crypto coin.
Earlier this year, Tesla announced its intention to accept bitcoin as a means of payment. The auto and technology company itself invested $ 1.5 billion in digital currency.
On Twitter, Musk now reports that the bitcoins the company receives are held as bitcoins. Thus, Tesla does not intend to exchange them for traditional currencies.
Bitcoin has risen sharply in value over the past year, in fits and starts. At the moment, the coin is worth more than eight times as much as a year ago, according to figures from the site CoinMarketCap.com.
The broader acceptance of crypto coins plays a role in this. For example, more and more professional investors are investing in bitcoin.
